Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression associated with late autumn and winter and is thought to be caused by a lack of sunlight. SAD affects over 1 million people each year in Canada.

SAD can affect employers in several different ways. Employees who are experiencing the effects of SAD can feel increased sadness, fatigued, and lack interest in their work. This results in less productive employees, an increased number of absences, and potential health issues.

Signs of SAD

  • Sadness
  • Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Restless activity
  • Irritability
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

SAD Prevention at Work

  • Providing employees with resources and information regarding mental health in the workplace
  • Providing a safe work environment that promotes and supports stress reduction and mental health
  • Providing counselling and assistance for employees who experience problems relating to mental health in the workplace
  • Providing employees with support and reasonable accommodation when returning to work after a period of absence due to stress and/or mental health issues
